California Hotel and Casino

California Hotel and Casino is one of three Boyd Gaming properties in downtown Las Vegas. It caters to tourists from Hawai’i. Boyd Gaming operates junkets from there to Las Vegas while offering several dining options specializing in Island specialties. The motto is “Aloha Spoken Here.” The other downtown Las Vegas Boyd Gaming Casinos are Main Street Station and Fremont.

The property is often described as The Cal. There are 19 table games and 810 slot and video poker machines. This includes around 24 coin video poker machines located by the Ogden entrance and near the front desk. A small selection of slots and video poker machines is on the mezzanine level. The Cal also offers live keno and a sportsbook lounge.

At The Cal, there is a $37.28 nightly resort fee per room. It includes complimentary self-parking, local calls, in-room Wi-Fi for up to three devices, an in-room refrigerator, boarding pass printing, and access to the fitness center and seasonal rooftop pool. Other property amenities include three restaurants, an ice cream shop, a chocolate shop, and a convention space. There is also an arcade along the mezzanine-level walkway to Main Street Station.

California offers a large variety of video poker games among its 810 slot machines. A handful still operate on quarters and dollar coins. Many of the others have progressives for a royal flush. There are also many 99% and better video poker games at California. Some are on the vintage coin machines.

Many of the slots are old-fashioned reels with network progressive jackpots. Vegas Advantage members receive exclusive information on the best video poker, electronic tables, and table game limits at The Cal.

There is also a Boyd Sportsbook and live Keno on the property. The Cal Sports Lounge is located near the table game pit. It features bartop and lounge seating and multiple televisions.

Blackjack rules at The Cal

Most tables at The Cal are double-deck blackjack. This game pays 3/2 and permits double down before but not after splitting. The dealer hits soft 17. There is a six-deck that pays 6/5.

California craps odds

Of the 66 casinos in Las Vegas that dealt craps as of December 1, only three cap odds at double the line bet.

California Casino, along with Fremont, and South Point, offers the lowest craps odds in Las Vegas. It is only double odds. Once again, this wins them the Vegas DisAdvantage Award for Craps Odds.

The Vegas DisAdvantage Award for Craps Odds in 2024 is 2x

Boyd Rewards Players Club

The Vegas DisAdvantage Award for a Players Club in 2024 goes to Boyd Rewards

California uses the Boyd Rewards players card. Changes to Boyd Rewards left most video poker and table game players behind from most of the benefits. In our experience, the mailers do not make up for it. It is probably fine for slot players, but for anyone else, we think Boyd Rewards is the worst players club in Las Vegas. Therefore, Boyd Rewards once again won the Vegas DisAdvantage Award for Players Clubs.

Other Boyd properties in Las Vegas include Aliante, Cannery, Fremont, Gold Coast, Jokers Wild, Main Street Station, Orleans, Sam’s Town, and Suncoast.

Dining experiences at California

We have grabbed a bite to eat multiple times at Market Street Cafe. Located off the casino floor, it is open 24 hours daily. The menu includes a variety of cafe favorites like soups, salads, steak, chicken, shrimp, prime rib, short ribs, and several island favorites. Oxtail soup is available from 11pm until 6am. Breakfast is served from 6am until 11:30am.

Also off the main casino floor, Redwood Steakhouse is the fine dining option. It is open for dinner Thursday through Monday night. Redwood offers steaks, chops, and fresh seafood.

There are additional options on the mezzanine level near the bridge to Main Street Station. Aloha Specialties is a Hawaiian restaurant that opens daily at 9am. The menu features include noodles, teriyaki, stews, curry, and combination plates. Guests looking for a sweet treat will find Lappert’s Ice Cream Shop and Ethel M Chocolates.

More Vegas Advantage Memories

California was the fourth stop on our 21st-anniversary world record visit to 93 casinos. John occasionally played the quarter Treasure Chest video poker machine. It is coin-operated and the last of its kind. Treasure Chest plays like Bonus Poker, except when a player gets four of a kind, five treasure chests are shown. The player chooses one for the bonus of up to $1200. The machine was near the Ogden and Main Street entrance. It disappeared in 2025.
